Our Roof

Our Sacred Place Needs Your Help!

The Kundalini Yoga Ashram, corporate entity of The Rudra Center for Enlightened Awareness, has been a legal non-profit 501(c) 3 organization since 1972. Our mission is to make ancient spiritual practices available to more people and to offer complementary programs to support the total well-being of body, mind, and spirit.

Since 1971, the Kundalini Yoga Ashram, affectionately known as The Rudra Center for Enlightened Awareness, has been serving the community by compassionately opening its doors to seekers of self-knowledge. The Ashram provides a place of rediscovery for individuals who have lost their way on their life’s journey and those who have forgotten who they are in the world.

As the last active original ashram of the Rudranada Lineage, the community has served tens of thousands of people seeking to reconnect with their spirit and develop a spiritually focused lifestyle in its 45 plus years. These programs have provided a foundation for individuals to create a more compassionate, service-focused and purposeful life, and continues to inspire people to be part of the solution on this planet we all share. Many individuals who have studied here have moved on to successful careers in holistic healthcare, ecological farming, teaching and much more.

Today we are reaching out asking for support to sustain this spiritual oasis for generations to come and we pray you will see the value in our need – to help us build a new roof on the main building at the Ashram.

History of the Roof

Why We Need Your Help Now

  • History

In 1994, a third roof was added to the Ashram. This was built on top of the two failing roofs.

  • Texas Weather

Every year in North Texas we experience storm season from the months of March through June, then again in the fall from October through December. These harsh storms bring strong winds, tornadoes, and large hail every season.

  • No Insurance

It is important to note that the Ashram does not have home insurance and because of this all expenses are left to the community to cover. The cost of insurance is more than the Ashram can manage month-to-month.

  • Devastating Hail Storms

In 2014, we experienced a severely harsh hail storm that rained golf ball-sized hail demolishing our roof.

  • 15 Years of Patching

As a way to keep costs low and protect residents, participants and sacred art we have spent the last 15 years patching leaks on the roof of our teacher quarters and meditation hall.

  • The Reality

After years of this practice we are faced with the reality that we are in need of a new roof. The leaks have been unmanageable for the last 7 years and the damage is increasing on the ceilings and walls of the community hall. The cost keeps accumulating and we are forced to address the roof with proper construction.

What We Are Seeking

We’ve conducted a competitive bid with a range of contractors and the consensus is that our roof is in dire need of replacement from the framing up. Whole sections of shingles have been blown off, plus hundreds of large welts in the shingles from hail have exposed the decking and allowed the water to seep right into our building from the heavy rains. Because the roof has three layers of shingles, is two and a half stories tall, and steep, the cost to replace this roof has been separated into two large projects.

The first phase is to the tear off all three layers, and then replace all of the plywood. Then synthetic felt will be applied across the roof on all sides. The second phase involves installing all of the roof shingles including starter strip, ridge cap, drip edge, pipe jacks, vent replacement, and even an old chimney removal.

We are reaching out to our extended communities, individuals, foundations, and corporations for assistance in our efforts to restore our infrastructure, so that we can continue serving the community around us in a safe container. Your tax-deductible donation will help us provide a safe sanctuary for programs that we are committed to offering for generations.

Scope of Work

From the Selected Construction Company (in their words)

Phase 1:

Tear off the entire roof by removing two layers of shingles and one layer of wood shake shingles from the roof. Dispose of waste in landfill. Two story charges apply.

Re-deck the entire roof using 7/16″ OSB RB plywood and proper deck clips and fasteners. Add ice and water shield to all valleys, and synthetic felt to roof. Finish roof deck with Drip Edging around the perimeter of roof. Two story charges apply.

Clean attic ensuring to be as careful as possible, drop all waste down to the ground and transfer by wheelbarrow to the dump truck. There will be a considerable amount of wood chips and shakes falling down into the attic during roof tear off. Because of the three layers of roof, we will need to clean up in the attic. This will require us to have access into the attic on the day of build.

Remove the old chimney and dispose. Clean up property from all nails and trash. Roof has a five year installation warranty, and shingles have a 30 year manufacturer warranty, or lifetime with class 4 impact resistant shingle.

Phase 1 Price: $11,650

Phase 2:

Replace Shingles. Install Certainteed Landmark Max Def 30 year Architectural composition shingles. This includes three bundles of Starter course, and ridge cap. Add one pipe jack and exhaust cap to roof pipes. Install ridge vent system to roof. Two story and 8/12 steep charges apply.

There are two options we could take in Phase 2:

  • Option 1: Price $12,600 for Standard Grade Roof.
  • Option 2: Price: $15,800 for Class 4 Impact Resistant Roof

We would prefer to raise enough for the Class 4 Impact Resistant shingles, including Impact Resistant Ridge Cap on all hip and ridge. This roof is hail resistant and would ensure that we don’t have to replace our roof every hail season. Ridge vents and all pipes and stacks included. Two story and 8/12 steep charges apply.
